Victor Cruz: Giants Receiver and Bridgton Alumnus Now Known to Everyone
Cruz’ transition from unheralded rookie to attention garnering star is the subject of Sam Borden’s “Giants Secret Weapon No Longer,” in the New York Times.
Signed as an undrafted free agent, Cruz (Bridgton Academy ’05) didn’t catch the attention of many as he entered the league- personnel people, coaches, opposing players.
“At the start of the 2011 season, Cruz was a relative nobody; this year, as the Giants seek to defend their Super Bowl title, he is among the league’s biggest threats,” Borden writes.(NYT)
What a difference success and a super bowl ring make. Cruz will not surprise opposing coaches and players this year. The onus is on Cruz to improve his game.
Eric Mangini, former N.F.L. coach now ESPN commentator explained to Borden:
“He’s [Cruz] going to have a lot to process…There are plenty of different ways that teams might try to cover him, and the one thing I know for sure is that he will probably end up seeing almost all of them, because teams are not going to be surprised this time around…
It’s going to be on Cruz and Eli [Giants quarterback Eli Manning] to communicate and adapt…That communication is going to be critical.”
Cruz is doing everything in his power to prove that last year wasn’t a flash in pan.
