Shady Side Academy Announces a New Leader: Considers Expanded Boarding Program

Thomas Cangiano becomes Shady Side Academy‘s fifteenth president and takes office as the school considers moving from a 5 to a 7 day boarding program.

Shady Side has always had a small boarding program, however, Cangiano has begun exploring growth through an expanded boarding program- possibly raising Shady Sides current population of roughly 50 to about 120.

Both changes would move the school toward the larger goal of making Shady Side more competitive in the boarding school market.

“We’re probably talking about going from a boarding school population of 50 to 120 total boarders…Right now, we draw them from a two- to three-hour radius from Pittsburgh,” Cangiano told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Voicing the board’s perspective, Shady Side trustee chair Steve Lee commented”

“We are keenly aware that this truly is a global business environment today…As Shady Side graduates students into the world of colleges, we know that they’ll be exposed to a broad spectrum of U.S. students, foreign students, students of different stripes and lifestyles.”(PT-R)

Cangiano will also work to solidify and build more bridges locally, adding:

“We’re trying to have a more systematic community service expectation from our kids and forge some long-term relationships with social service organizations in Pittsburgh,”(PT-R)

I support this change fully and would challenge the boarding program to actively recruit from aboard to diversify the student base beyond not only the region but also from overseas.
