Ross School Installs Solar Panels: Benefits From Economic Stimulus Grant

Ross School has received a more than $200,000 grant to install solar panels on the school’s Barn Building.

The grant comes through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

“…According to school officials, it currently costs roughly $12,000 annually to power the Barn Building, where the 49.2 kilowatt system will be installed. With the addition of these panels, the school believes they will be able to reduce these costs by 90 percent.

“’There are a few reasons the Barn Building was chosen. It has a brand new roof that faces just 10 degrees off true south … There is minimal tree coverage, a concern in winter time solar production,’” noted Ross School Facilities Director Jim Knowlan. “’Finally, the limitations of the project size and production closely suited the actual yearly electric cost of the building.’” (State Helps Villages and School Go Solar, The Sag Harbor Express)

Installation of the solar panels continues the school’s commitment to the environment and reducing their ecological footprint. To learn more about their green initiatives, visit
