Don’t Judge a Book…
I know you’ve heard this one before – “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Well, I want to encourage you to keep that phrase in mind as you navigate your way through your own boarding school selection process. There are many schools, literally hundreds, to choose from and each has their own uniqueness about them.
Some are small and some are large. Some are coed and some are all-boys or all-girls. Some have endless extracurricular opportunities and some have a more limited selection. Some on are the East Coast and, yet others are scattered across North America.
The fact that you are here at AdmissionsQuest shows that you have, at least, opened the Book of Boarding Schools. From where I am from here in the Midwest, saying the word “boarding school” will sometimes get you a crazy look. When you first heard of boarding schools, what were the first thoughts that ran thought your mind? (I am curious to know – leave a comment below.)
For me, my first impression of a boarding school was “where only the elite, privileged sons and daughters of dignitaries would go”. But where did I get that? Wherever I developed that nonsense sure wouldn’t have led me to where I am today without truly finding out for myself.
So, don’t rule out schools based on what your friends have said or what you’ve seen in movies. You are on this journey because you truly care about the best possible development for your child. And for that, you should be commended.
When prospective parent’s first start looking into a boarding school experience, one of the first questions to come to mind is, “How can I let my child go?” When they ask that question an open house or reception, I simply turn to a current parent for their response. And, a typical response from a current parent will be, “Knowing what I know now, how could I not let him/her go?”
Remember, not every school is the right fit for your son or daughter, regardless of location, endowment size or perceived prestige. But, there is the right school out there. Align your child’s mission with the mission of the school and you’ll be well on your way to finding the right fit.
