Mercersburg Academy students were happy, down-to-earth and very comfortable in their rural, family-like setting. They have a very diverse campus where they emphasize the value of community and collaboration, while offering a very challenging academic curriculum and many extracurricular options both in visual and performing arts, music, athletics, robotics, clubs and they open doors beyond Mercersburg. Weekend actives were varied, interesting and exciting on campus events.
The students I met on campus have come to learn, to grow, to become part of a community, and try new endeavors with great successes. They are motivated and they want a stimulating curriculum, with teachers that care and a student body who is also interested and interesting. They are becoming good global citizens and very capable leaders through their strong school culture and the schools emphasize on service to others and taking stewardship of the environment.
Mercersberg is an exciting campus where you can take Chinese or German. You can choose an art for a sport option, tutor at a local elementary school, or participate in strong theater arts, School Year abroad program in France and Spain keeps students on track academically by combining total immersion in local language and culture with core subjects, such as math, taught in English. Classrooms have Harkness tables not desks to facilitate discussion and encourage collaboration among students. Classes seemed better prepared and more engaged. They are directing their learning!
Lunch was extremely busy with sign ups going on for international and domestic travels programs happening during spring and summer break offered through Mercersburg (China, France, India, Ireland, Gulf Coast Service trip, Chile, France, Switzerland, Germany, Multisport excursion to Jackson WY, Spain). Global short term trips let students explore the Royal Shakespeare Company in England, explore cultural legacy of South Africa through art and dance, speak Spanish in Chili, or scuba dive in Honduras.
A great location- near the Smithsonian, Kennedy Center, Gettysburg and Antietam. Computer labs, language labs, wireless campus, digital art and music, Learning Services Center, I just saw so much around each corner it was better then some college campuses. Athletic facilities were great with turf fields, great swimming, diving, squash programs, lacrosse, field hockey, soccer, football and a new field house going in this year.
I found myself pleasantly surprised and just wanting to see more and learn more around each corner of campus. In actuality it is a “breath of fresh air” and a need to see campus on your search this year for a boarding school option! It is not too late to visit their Admission Open House on October 12th and please enjoy your visit as much as I did!
