History
Cheshire Academy was founded in 1794 as a college preparatory school that would also prepare young men for the ministry. Under the direction of the Reverend John Bowden, the school opened its doors to both boys and girls – something quite unique at that time. Bowden Hall, erected in 1796, is still in use today as administrative offices. The school has gone through several phases in its history, including periods as a boys’ school and a military academy. The first international students were admitted in the 1840’s. In 1937, the school adopted a new charter and became known as Cheshire Academy. Cheshire returned to coeducation in 1969, and now focuses on a student-centered, leadership-based philosophy. Academically, the school’s goal is to provide a comprehensive college-preparatory education that encompasses global understanding and 21st century skills.
Today Cheshire Academy offers both day and boarding programs for students in grades 9-12 and postgraduate. A combination of academics, athletics, the arts, community service, leadership opportunities, a diverse environment, and a strong residential life program helps students contribute to the life of the school and to discover passions and talents that will shape their futures as global thinkers.
