Cheshire Academy History

Cheshire Academy was founded in 1794 as a college preparatory school that would also prepare young men for the ministry. Under the direction of the Reverend John Bowden, the school opened its doors to both boys and girls – something quite unique at that time. Bowden Hall, erected in 1796, is still in use today as administrative offices. The school has gone through several phases in its history, including periods as a boys’ school and a military academy. The first international students were admitted in the 1840’s. In 1937, the school adopted a new charter and became known as Cheshire Academy. Cheshire returned to coeducation in 1969, and now focuses on a student-centered, leadership-based philosophy. Academically, the school’s goal is to provide a comprehensive college-preparatory education that encompasses global understanding and 21st century skills. Cheshire Academy’s Middle School, for grades 6 through 8, offers day students a comprehensive curriculum, athletic options, and leadership opportunities. While maintaining a program appropriate to the ages of its students, the Middle School is an integral and vibrant part of the life of the whole school community, and students who elect to “step up” to the Upper School often become community leaders in their high school careers. The Upper School features both day and boarding programs for students in grades 9 through a postgraduate year. A combination of academics, athletics, the arts, community service, leadership opportunities, a diverse environment, and a strong residential life program helps students contribute to the life of the school and to discover passions and talents that will shape their futures as global thinkers.

Cheshire Academy Notes

Cheshire Academy is a community within a community, close to large cities, yet suburban enough that students feel comfortable on- and off-campus. At Cheshire Academy, you will find a dynamic, friendly student body. On the fields, in the classrooms, and throughout the dormitories, our students build lasting relationships with friends from across the country and around the world. Students, teachers, coaches, and parents combine their diverse talents to create a learning and living environment that honors the differences in all of us. Within that close-knit community, our students come to recognize their own promise and potential. Our history includes women and men who changed the course of world events because they stood up for who they are, and we’re proud they learned to do that here. One recent graduate explained, “What really matters in high school is that students find their own spark. In an environment like Cheshire, where students can expand themselves in ways they wouldn’t expect – that’s where growing happens.” While our past makes us one of the nation’s oldest schools, our curriculum encourages intellectual and ethical maturity for today’s global society. Faculty at Cheshire Academy use diverse, innovative teaching styles to pinpoint and enhance students’ talents.
